Citizenship and Democracy in the Classrooms: A Need for Soledad’s Society Purposes aligned to linguistic competences as a base for the development of skills in the foreign language are usually found as the goals in English language syllabuses especially in Colombian public schools. However, this linguistic emphasis has not contributed as expected for the consolidation of an awareness on the helpfulness of the learning of the English language in communities affected by problematic social phenomenon such as unemployment, violence, poverty, lack of higher education opportunities, sexual precocity and dysfunctional families. In this paper I will explain how the inclusion of practices on democracy and citizenship in the classroom can be useful both to create a more tolerant and respectful society in Soledad and a more purposeful, motivating and contextualized learning and teaching of the foreign language in the I.E. John F. Kennedy de Soledad, Atlà ¡ntico. Colombia has been declar ed as a democratic, participatory and pluralistic republic (Colombian Political Const. Art 1, 1991). Nonetheless, there is no a consensus among experts when trying to define what a democracy is. This no-consensus has generated that different types of democracy can also be proposed according to the way and the amount of participation of their citizens in the process of decision-making.
